Dr. Deena Hitzke

Arizona Licensed Professional Counselor — License #LPC-19587
This independently owned practice is operated by Deena Hitzke, LPC, in accordance with all regulations set forth by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners.

For over three decades, I’ve walked alongside individuals and families as they navigate life’s most tender transitions—supporting them through anxiety, depression, grief, and the relationship challenges that can make daily life feel overwhelming.

My work draws from Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Attachment-Focused Counseling, Psychosocial Analysis, Somatic Therapy, Reminiscence Therapy, Reflective Practice, and Transformational Leadership. These approaches allow us to explore both the patterns that shaped you and the strengths that can carry you forward.

In our sessions, we work collaboratively—slowing down, reflecting deeply, and making space for the emotions, memories, and relationships that have shaped your nervous system and your story. The goal is to help you rediscover stability, authenticity, emotional balance, and genuine self-trust.

Over the past 32 years, I’ve helped thousands of people strengthen their relationships, expand their life skills, and reconnect with a sense of purpose, joy, and inner steadiness.

Healing isn’t linear—it’s lived, felt, and integrated over time.
Here, you’re invited to move at your own pace, with intention, compassion, and support.

Guided Integrative Autobiography (8 weeks)

A supportive process of exploring your life story to make meaning from past experiences—both positive and painful. This work helps integrate identity, foster self-understanding, and deepen your sense of purpose and wholeness.

Complicated Grief Treatment (16 weeks)

An evidence-based grief therapy that gently guides you in processing loss, reducing distress, and reshaping your relationship with memories. Through reflection and guided exercises, you learn to cope with emotions, release blame or guilt, and reconnect with life.

Interpersonal Therapy (26 weeks)

An attachment-focused approach for improving emotional connection and communication. This therapy helps you reality-test unhelpful thoughts, practice healthier relationship patterns, set boundaries, and restore trust with yourself and others.

Psychosocial Development Therapy (6 weeks)

A mind-body and cognitive-based program that supports emotional healing and self-realization. You’ll learn how thoughts, self-talk, and somatic awareness shape emotional wellbeing—and how to shift them to reduce distress and strengthen resilience.

 Transformative Reminiscence Therapy

These programs support healing through reflection, emotional processing, and gentle integration.

Sessions are available individually or in small groups.

The Mindful Den / Somatic Therapy

A Clinical, Trauma-Informed Approach Rooted in the Body

At Deena Hitzke Counseling, our therapeutic approach is grounded in a deep understanding of complex trauma and the ways the body stores unmetabolized experiences. Research in the field of trauma—such as the work of Bessel van der Kolk and others—shows that the body often “keeps the score” long after the mind has moved on. This means that healing does not always begin with verbal storytelling. In fact, for many people, talking about trauma too early can feel overwhelming or even re-traumatizing.

Dr. Deena Hitzke incorporates somatic practices into therapy because the nervous system plays a central role in how trauma is held, expressed, and ultimately resolved. Somatic work helps clients build awareness of internal sensations, regulate their physiological responses, and reconnect with parts of themselves that have been shut down for protection. By learning to notice and name sensations—tightness, pressure, numbness, heat, or movement—you begin processing trauma at the level where it originally occurred: in the body.

Safety First: Preparing the Nervous System for Healing

Somatic-based therapy offers a slower, more regulated entry point into trauma work. Before moving into deeper processing methods, such as EMDR, clients build the capacity, stability, and coping tools necessary to stay grounded. This preparation reduces overwhelm and creates a safer, more effective healing experience.

As clients develop nervous-system awareness and regulation skills, their bodies often start to feel safer—and with safety comes increased openness to remembering, understanding, and releasing what has been held. This process unfolds at your pace, supported by a clinician with extensive training in trauma, EMDR, and somatic modalities.

A Sensory-Responsive Environment That Supports Regulation

The Mindful Den extends this therapeutic philosophy into the physical environment. Each room is intentionally designed with different sensory elements—lighting, textures, seating, temperature, and sound—allowing clients of all ages to choose the space that best supports their nervous system on any given day. This flexibility is especially valuable for individuals with sensory sensitivities, trauma histories, or emotional overwhelm.

This approach is part of our commitment to intuitive, client-centered care: you are given meaningful choice, agency, and collaboration in your healing process. Many clients express that, for the first time, they feel they have permission to choose what their body needs rather than conforming to a one-size-fits-all therapy setting.

At Deena Hitzke Counseling and The Mindful Den, we prioritize safety, regulation, and informed attunement. We meet you where you are—physically, emotionally, and neurologically—and work with you to create a regulated foundation for trauma healing that honors both your body and your story.

"When I lost my father, Dr. Hitzke helped me to get through the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance in a way that reassured me I would find a way to become whole again.  It was scary to feel so torn to pieces, not knowing how to go on without him.  But, somehow she showed me that he would always be a part of my life, and that I was his legacy."
